I was so excited finding this Web site that I didn't realize how many wonderful photos were on it--even the boulder I mentioned! Should have known it was already included! How cool! Also, my sister reminded me that my grandmother, Louise Phillips, was age 97 and died in Sept '02. Oops! I was too excited to think!

One more thing! My Mom had a large boulder moved to the site where the lodge once stood. It has a huge brass plate inscripted honoring my grandfather, the camp, and its many campers. The boulder was literally finished and placed the week my grandmother, Louise Phillips, died at age 98 in Sept 2003. After her funeral, we had our friends join us at the site to see the memorial and have a picnic dinner! It was great!

Oh, my gosh! I cannot believe I have stumbled onto this PGC site! I am Hermon Phillips' granddaughter, one of three from Indianapolis! My mother, Lou Ann Lanagan (Hermon's daughter), just started writing a book about Lake James and camp!

My grandfather would be so happy to know you have a camp Web site! My Mom, my sisters, and I loved camp so much--even moreso after it was gone, and our memories are so vivid of so many of you!

I will visit this Web site often! Please e-mail me if you'd like. I'd love to find any memorabilia you have or photos. Oh, those were the days! Wait til I tell my Mom!!

Came across this site while describing to my husband what a wonderful time I had at Pokagon. I always stayed the full 8 weeks, had 4 years total from 68-71, I remember going with Phil and others to the Kellog's factory in Battle Creek.I'll never forget Martha & Mary Makarius and their beautiful handwriting! I was in Cabins #4, 8, 14, Dewdrop Inn and stayed in the Lodge my last year. Whenever I see Hawaiian Punch, I always think of "Bug Juice" in the silver pitchers!By far, the best part of my childhood and teenage years were spent at Camp Pokagon, I'll never foget it-ever!

Hi there! The website is great! Going to camp was always the best, and what an impact it had on our lives! I live outside of Louisville, KY. My husband and I have two teenagers; Allie(18) and Stephen(16). They grew up going to camp too! I am going to dig up some old camp pix and send them along. You know, there really was nothing better than washing your hair in the lake!

Many years ago, after camp closed, Lakie gave me a box of camp photos -- the ones taken by the pro photographer. (Remember photo day? Dress in whites!) They include campers by cabin, group shots, and staff photos. In most cases the year is not identified but cabins are. So I'm going to start scanning -- must be 200 or more! -- and posting the cabin photos. I'll be guessing the year so feel free to help me out! It's a really interesting process, investigating the year the photo was taken: the type of photo, where it was taken, who I recognize in the photo, what type of shoes campers are wearing! Take a look at the Photo Album/Campers.Cabins page and click on the cabin number to check for new postings, starting with Cabin 1. I know already some of you are in them -- let's see if you'll 'fess up and ID the photo! Have fun! (This may not be that hard since Lori G. [adorable!] is in so many of them

The turtle fascination continues . . . did anyone see "Cinderella Man" yet? See it, and you'll get it.

. . . Just a recommendation for a great flick.

Hi Linda -- Yes! We'd love to have pictures if they're scanned in. It's also great if you can identify the year and/or cabin if you know it. We may not be able to post everything that comes in, but you can email them to staff@pokagongirls.com. Thanks!

The tether ball must have gotten taken down before the crayola...

I loved it myself, because when I was 10... I was a foot taller than everyone else.and weighed 25 lbs more...

Good for kickin ass at tether ball.

Well, I can tell that my claim to fame is being Loulie's elder sister!! And I can tell that things didn't change much from when I was a camper at Pokagon and the time you others spent there....isn't it wonderful to have that continuity?

The two summers I was there I was in Cabins 5 and 6, and like all good campers, I carved my initials in a secret place in Cabin 6, which my sister then found as a camper. When they were tearing the camp down, she was able to retrieve that piece of wood, and she still has it....somewhere!!!!

So the tradition continues....

P.S. Loulie, remember never let the truth interfere with a good story....

Lou

We found Barb's *original* camp map, in living crayola color! Check it out -- there's more to it! (Still can't quite make out the turtle cage; must be behind "the other half of houseboat.")

OK, Martha and I are spending WAY to much time on this site! It is WONDERFUL! (Either that or we need a life!) I can't believe you have links to articles about CAM the Canoe Man!!! FYI, for anyone who doesn't know, Julia Steinfirst met her husband at my wedding -- a friend of Kevin's...both good ole Hoosiers! When is the reunion???

don't know what made Lou write back after 15 years but I am all for it! I have kept in touch pretty well, with Mak and Nancy Isaacs (Now Hewlett) and Annie off and on... John and I lived east for quite a while 17 years, and have been here in Lake Forest IL for almost 5 yrs now, found a fantastic old fashioned family run (going on 70 yrs) boys camp deep in the northwoods of Minnesota for my triplet boys to attend, they love it! Boys are very different than girls!...Sam's delight his first year when he told me that he did NOT plan on changing his boxers the whole time he was away from me! I said, "fine, its your camp!" anyway, anyone in the north chicago area is welcome anytime, altho we travel chasing after kid activities alot... you are all welcome ...we have plenty of room! and chaos! Debo - are you still in Virginia? we miss it!

Thank you for starting this wonderful site. The photos bring back fond memories. I remember my counselor went to Indiana U and was a Theta. I went on to be a Theta as well as my cousin and fellow camper Martha Makarius Burgess. I think we were influenced in a positive way at a young age!

I am cracking up! Thanks to the cool counselor who thought of creating this sight!

Crazy memory: I was a camper in Cabin 2 or 5. . . the cabin became infested with mice in the middle of the night. I woke up and found one staring at me on my pillow (in the top bunk!) We had to evacuate to the lodge in the dark. Great refuge! Ha! Do you like swooping bats? Maybe Adele or Lori G remember this.
